Qwerkytoys wants to bring that old-fashioned typewriter look and feel to the modern age of tablets and desktops. The Qwerkywriter is an 84 key, USB, typewriter inspired mechanical keyboard.
The retro keyboard features custom typewriter inspired keycaps, an integrated tablet stand and a detachable USB cable via mini-USB port. It is designed to work with any device that can use a USB keyboard but the company is also working on adding Bluetooth wireless support.
According to the company’s Kickstarter page:
- The Qwerkywriter is a mechanical keyboard (a modern switch that emulates a typewriter clicky feel), that features beautiful chrome accented round keycaps and a vintage typewriter inspired frame.
- The Qwerkywriter’s tablet stand can accommodate a wide range of tablets up to 5/8 inches thick. For best results, we are trying to integrate Bluetooth wireless support as a possible stretch goal.
- The Chrome Return Bar and the Platen Knobs on the side will function as a programmable macro function keys.
- Blank Keycaps upon request. Fonts are user replaceable. WIN/MAC OSX layout supported.
- $289 price point reflects machine tools, the cost of the mechanical key switches of the highest quality, custom molded 3-piece keycap to narrow tolerance specs, and a beautiful hybrid metal/plastic frame.

The company plans to start shipping the Qwerkywriter sometime in the spring of 2015 and they have already raised nearly $55,000 toward their $90,000 goal.
Yes, I sort of do want one of these babies. I’m old enough to have started out writing on a manual typewriter, then an IBM Selectric, etc. This keyboard looks great and probably has a great feel too.
