There’s been a lot of controversy over high frame rates. A lot of people don’t think they make movies look better, but they sure do wonders for video games. Still, Peter Jackson and James Cameron feel high frame rates in movies are the way of the future, and Cameron is debating how many frames per second he wants to go for the Avatar sequels.
Cameron always wants to be at the forefront of whatever the next breakthrough in movie technology is, and he recently told Collider that the process in creating the sequels is “going well” even though things are “still in the early stages. Right now we’re developing the software. I’m writing the scripts. We’re designing all the creatures and characters and the settings and so on.”
As far as the frame rates for the movies, “I’m studying that. I haven’t made a final decision yet, whether the entire film will be made at [a] high frame rate or parts of it. We’ll be shooting at a native resolution of probably 4K and there should be a lot of 4K theaters by then as well.”
The fact that Cameron may shoot part of Avatar at a certain frame rate could be interesting, although it’s hard to imagine how he would utilize this. Would there be another planet were things look more like video tape? (This has been a common complaint against high frame rates.) However Cameron decides to shoot the next Avatar flick, we’d be willing to bet the next Avatar movie will play in a number of different formats, much like the Hobbit.
The Avatar sequels are reportedly going to start filming some time this year, and the first one is due in theaters in 2016.
