Toshiba’s recently launched SATA 7200 RPM, 2.5 inch MKxx61GSYG hard disk drive features integrated hardware-level encryption and is capable of erasing itself if stolen.
Because it employs AES-256 encryption, the HDD meets the minimum standards required for use in US government institutions. It has also been certified as FIPS 197 compliant by NIST, the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
As noted above, the HDD’s encryption is executed at a hardware level, reducing the likelihood of compatibility problems and making the process virtually unnoticeable to end users.
For example, users do not have to manually perform encryption – as the process automatically runs during routine read/write operations.
In addition, since the encryption feature is completely integrated, deployment of the HDD is both secure and fast.
If the the disk is physically detached from the host computer and fed incorrect access credentials, the protected disk can be programmed to either restrict access, eliminate some/all data or execute a cryptographic erase.
Finally, the HDD allows for secure remote management using tools such as AMT (Active Management Technology) from Intel.
The MKxx61GSYG is currently available in capacities of 640GB, 500GB, 320GB, 250GB and 160 GB.
