Back in the eighties, I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to see Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, but I’m glad I eventually went.
There’s a lot of what I like to call Chronicles of Dudes comedies, but very few of them, like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, are actually funny. It takes real skill to do stupid comedy well, the archetypal dude Jeff Spicoli set the bar very high, but when I finally saw Bill and Ted, as well as the sequel, I was quite pleasantly surprised.
You can’t blame Keanu Reeves from wanting to move away from Bill and Ted, as it’s very easy to get typecast in Hollywood, much like Cameron Crowe moved away from doing stoner comedy after his follow up to Fast Times, The Wild Life, sank with a loud thud at the box office. He once joked if he didn’t move on to movies like Say Anything and Singles, he was “headed towards Encino Man.”
Still, it would indeed be nice to see Bill and Ted back together for one more go around, and I’m just as surprised as anyone to be reading this may actually happen.
Apparently there is a script for the next Bill and Ted, and ComicBook.comconfirms that it’s gotten Keanu’s seal of approval. Plus, both Reeves and Winter have said if the script was good, and the original writers, Christ Matheson and Ed Solomon (who also adapted Men in Black) were involved, they’d come back.
Reeves also told to Moviefone that the new Bill and Ted script is indeed “good,” and Winter further tweeted, “Script done? Check. We love it? Check. Green light? Working on it!”
Much like the return of Beavis and Butthead, I’d love to see Bill and Ted make a comeback. Again, they did a great job at being dumb way back when, and if they could pick up right where they left off, it would definitely be dude nirvana.
