In what’s certain to stoke the fires of Lucas haters everywhere, the man who created Star Wars just gave a speech at the Sundance Festival that sure to provoke the ire of many.
Lucas, who’s always been somewhat of a grump, did a Q&A with Robert Redford, and even though he became the establishment, Lucas was very anti-establishment when he started out. As Variety reports, Lucas derided Hollywood for being “more and more circus without any substance behind it.”
As for the argument that Star Wars created the blockbuster syndrome that lead to today’s circus, Lucas argued, “If you go into Star Wars and see what’s going on there, there’s a lot more substance than circus.” In the same speech, Lucas said that the secret to his fortune is, “All the money is in the action figures.”
At the same time, Redford admired the fact that Lucas built his own empire, telling the audience, “What I admire about what he’s done is he’s been able to control his own universe.” And I have to say, one comment he made about Hollywood is certainly true.
“Studio executive generally are not the most sophisticated people in the world…you do not want to be oppressed by people who are not as smart as you are, and I’m dumb.”
