Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is finally coming out this Friday, November 7, but it’s actually got some competition with the family film Big Hero 6. And some early reviewers are claiming it’s got Oscar potential.
IndieWire writes that with Big Hero 6, “Disney grabs the Marvel holy grail,” and many may not realize it’s a Marvel adaptation, which the filmmakers felt worked to their advantage. From a casual look at the ads, it’s hard to tell exactly what Big Hero 6 really is at first glace.
But IndieWire writes, “Big Hero 6 should be a big Oscar contender in what’s shaping up to be the most wide open race in years. Achieving breakthroughs in animation, VFX and rendering, Disney tackles a rich, anime-inspired CG look, and populates it with more diverse characters than ever.”
Having already seen Big Hero 6, I did enjoy it, and thought the animation and technical marvels of the film were remarkable. (It’s truly amazing what you can do with computer animation these days.) I did feel it tried a little too hard to tug on the audience’s heartstrings, but all in all it was a cute movie that should have a lot of appeal this weekend. Not sure about Oscars beyond the usual characters, but let’s see how the court of public opinion weighs in when Big Hero 6 comes out this Friday.
