Vocabulary
Keep variation in your vocabulary while writing anything. Try to never use the same word in a single essay twice, unless you are writing a book, of course, in which case you may use the word in question after a couple of chapters. If you run out of synonyms, use varying phrases and clauses to make up for it.
Adjusting the voice
Adjust your voice according to the need of the piece at hand. The best voice for any type of writing is the active voice. Passive voice is mostly redundant. Also know when to use first, second and third-person voice. Keep a semi-informal tone for writing a story about a teenager but assume a formal, third-person voice while writing a review on medical equipment.
The ending
If you are writing an argumentative essay, use quotations or the thesis statement to open the paragraph instead of the same old “In the end I would like to conclude by saying that…” type of endings. For stories, it is best to always begin writing with an ending in mind. Only then will you not be carried away and give it an over-complicated plot. Keep it coherent and realistic.
