One of the most important characters in the Marvel canon that hasn’t been adapted into a movie yet is Doctor Strange, but Benedict Cumberbatch is officially playing the lead, and the movie will shoot this winter for a November 6, 2016 release.
There have been reports that Tilda Swinton may play the Ancient One, a very interesting left of center choice, and now Deadline tells us that Chiwetel Ejiofor from Twelve Years a Slave will play Baron Mordo, the villain.
As Deadline mentions, this is another switch around for the Marvel characters, with an African American actor playing the villain, and a woman playing the Ancient One. The screenplay for Doctor Strange was written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, the upcoming reboot of The Mummy), and will be directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose).
As for the unexpected turns Doctor Strange has been taking, we’re all for it as long as the essence of the comics makes it to the screen intact. Again, a Doctor Strange movie is long overdue, and we hope that this long awaited phase three movie from Marvel will deliver next year.
