Okay, we know the early Twitter reaction to The Avengers Age of Ultron were very positive, and they were from a number of celebrity geeks, so at least with the geek elite the movie delivered. What do the legit critics think?
Well apparently several critics think the turkey got overstuffed this time. The Daily Beast called the movie “overkill,” and that “in making a more ‘personal’ sequel to his $1.5 billion grossing Avengers, Whedon hides a true Joss Whedon movie underneath all the forgettable CG bluster by confronting each member of the squad with their glairng personal failures.”
And indeed, rumor has had it for some time that The Avengers would be confronting themselves in this next installment, and in a similar vein, The Wrap felt Age of Ultron “lets functionality overwhelm the fun…the latest film isn’t a cheat, but neither is it a delight…Avengers feels like a solid but overstuffed episode, one more concerned with being connective tissue than anything else.”
Yet Variety wrote that the Avengers “get better” with Ultron, and that this “supersized sequel” has a “surprising amount of soul…Having gotten over the hump of assembling his six main characters in The Avengers, Joss Whedon brings a looser, more inventive and stylist touch to this skillful follow-up.”
Do the reviews ultimately mean anything? It certainly won’t at the box office, and with a fan driven genre like superhero movies, the court of public opinion is all that matters, and they’re sure to vote with their wallets in spades when Age of Ultron hits theaters on May 1.
