From Django Unchained to The Man With The Iron Fists

There’s a new trailer for Django Unchained that shows more of Samuel Jackson’s character in the film, and having read the script, I can tell you he’s been given a hell of a role.

Jackson and Quentin Tarantino are very close, Pulp Fiction was of course his big breakthrough role, and with Django, I have the feeling Sam’s going to steal the show.

Sure, there’s plenty of racist peckerwood a-holes to hate in Django, but Jackson plays a house slave who sold out to the white man, and tries to sell out Django as well. That’s all I’ll tell you, because Tarantino really wrote some great scenes for him, and he interacts amazingly well with the rest of the cast on the page. It’s great when a movie has a villain you love to hate, and Jackson’s character is absolutely one of those roles.

As Jackson told The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s a Tarantino movie, so there’s no thought that goes into am I gonna do it or not. I’m doin’ that, cause I know it’s great, or it’s gonna be great, or it’s gonna be controversial, or it’s gonna be something. It’s an opportunity to explore a place in my history that I hadn’t thought about, and deal with it in an honest and a very dramatic way.”

Now somewhat in a Tarantino-esque vein, the rapper RZA, who also has a role in Django, has his own martial arts film coming out, and it reminds me a bit of the chop socky flicks of old that you would see on Saturday morning TV. (Anyone remember Black Belt Theater hosted by John Saxon?)

The film is called The Man With the Iron Fists, and it was written by RZA and Eli Roth. Tarantino is presenting the film, which Universal will be releasing, and the trailer has a rap soundtrack that plays along to a lot of footage that looks derivative of Kill Bill and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

Along with RZA, Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu star, and the film is due in the fall, while Django is still on track for a Christmas day release.
