A number of Diablo III players recently claimed their accounts had been hacked – leading to the theft of gold and other items.
In response, Blizzard issued an official statement, attributing the increase in reported hacks to the recent launch of Diablo III. Apparently, similar patterns have been observed when new World of Warcraft expansion packs are released. Nevertheless, Blizzard says it is doing everything possible to help players keep their Battle.net account safe.
The company also reiterated that the Battle.net Authenticator and Battle.net Mobile Authenticator are still some the most effective ways to maintain secure accounts.
In other Diablo III related news, the latest iteration of the popular franchise is selling in droves – despite a number of high-profile server issues during launch.
Indeed, Destructoid confirms Diablo III sold 6.3 million copies in the week since it launched, with 3.5 million offloaded during the first 24 hours of launch (not counting the 1.2 million copies of the game that were given to players who signed up for the World of Warcraft Annual Pass promotion). And so it’s official: Diablo III is the fastest selling PC game in history.
Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime noted the company was proud of the game play feedback it received, but still regrets log in and server issues plaguing the game during early launch hours.
“[We want to] reaffirm our commitment to make sure the millions of Diablo III players out there have a great experience with the game moving forward,” he added.
