Did you know that xxx domains are neither cheap nor easy?
That’s right, because porn websites and non-adult companies could pay anywhere from $75-$650 to register .xxx domain names – or to keep themselves off.
Beginning in September, brand owners can apply with the ICM Registry to have their corporate names blocked from the steamy suffix.
The initiative is expected to help allow “legitimate” brands dissociate themselves from online pr0n and avoid being accused of cybersquatting.
Currently, there are approximately 60 registrars authorized to offer .xxx domain names for sale.
Depending on the registrar type and volume, brand owners could shell out anywhere between $249 and $648 to have their brand banned from the domain.
Of couse, as the World Trademark Review points out, certain prestigious corporations are likely pay more than $100,000 to defend their entire trademark portfolio from being associated with .xxx.
Meanwhile, porn sites will probably pay about $300 if they want to claim their .xxx suffix before the domain officially launches.
However, prices are expected to be reduced when .xxx domains are generally available, with adult-oriented site registrants paying only $75-$130 for their website names in the future.
