Is E-Mail Dead?

For someone who sends out tons of e-mails, and wishes he got more back in return, you wonder if e-mail just isn’t cool anymore. Maybe if I texted more, I’d get more responses. As much as I got dragged into the age of technology kicking and screaming, these days I wonder how I ever lived without the net and e-mail.

And perhaps e-mail could indeed be on the way out. We read reports all the time about this or that technological advance going the way of the dinosaur. (Facebook was recently marked for extinction before the end of the decade.)

The issue was raised again on Forbes, but you get the impression it’s going to take some time before it’s completely obsolete. (Hell, there’s still people buying fax machines these days.) We’re not sure how this issue came up recently, maybe because the company Kato.im is proclaiming e-mail dead.

Kato obviously wants to be the replacement for e-mail, and there’s other ways to communicate that Forbes brought up as well like Hipchat and Slack. But Forbes proclaims, “The vast majority of communication [in the future] will continue to happen via e-mail,” and AllBusiness proclaims that e-mail is not at all dead, “it’s the hub of social marketing content.”

So yeah, there’s a lot of things about e-mail that are a real pain in the ass, especially spam, online scams, and the fact that people don’t return them as fast as I’d like, if they return e-mail at all. But considering I’m still a luddite at heart who isn’t constantly texting away, staring into my iPhone while the rest of the world around me disappears, I’m still more than happy to keep emailing as long as I can.
