Apple today put out the latest version of its Safari Web browser, version 5.0.1, which adds a new feature allowing users to customize their Internet experience with sophisticated new features.
Namely, the new update to the browser adds Safari Extensions functionality, which Apple first unveiled last month. Extensions work similarly to the way add-ins work with Firefox, and are compatible with Javascript, CSS3, and HTML5 standards.
“We’re thrilled to see so many leading developers creating great extensions and think our users are going to love being able to customize Safari,” said VP of OS X product marketing Brian Croll.
Some of the first Extensions available include:
Amazon Wish Lists – Find any product on any website and Amazon will try to locate it in its store and allow you to add it to your shopping cart, without even going directly to Amazon.com.
Bing – Select text in any page and Microsoft’s Bing search engine will provide relevant information.
MLB.com – A live stream of MLB news and updates is provided directly on the Safari browser.
New York Times – News headlines embedded into Safari
Twitter – Pass on the link of your current site directly into your Twitter feed
As usual, Apple will still need to provide approval for all submitted Safari Extensions. Users can browse and download all available Extensions from extensions.apple.com.
Safari comes as the default browser for Mac computers and is also available for download on Windows at apple.com/safari.
