Leapfrog intros educational tablet for kids

It’s never to early to enter the tablet market.

Leapfrog, a leading manufacturer in educational video games and electronics, has announced the LeapPad.

Its latest device takes a cue from the iPad, giving users all sorts of apps on a handheld, touch-screen gadget. Of course, the hook is that it’s designed for handling by children, with a compact and rugged form factor.

Additionally, the apps are mostly focused on educational topics like writing and reading, with a few easy and accessible mini-games available as well.

The device also has a camera and a selection of videos aimed at the target 4+ age category. Other games and apps include a digital painting app, math exercises, and introductory geography lessons.

Additional content will be available both through download and on physical cartridge-based expansion.

“We wanted LeapPad to offer kids the ability to create their own personalized experiences and have fun while learning at their own pace with content that automatically adjusts to their skill level. LeapPad’s apps inspire kids to explore their inner creativity. Whether doodling on photos taken with the built-in camera, creating a story about themselves in the Story Studio, or bringing their favorite characters to life with the Animation Studio, there is truly something for every child,” said Leapfrog in a statement.

The LeapPad is available for pre-order now, at just $99.
