Cowon has debuted an Android-powered media player with some pretty sweet specs.
Dubbed “D3 Plenue,” the device boasts a capacitive, 3.7″ AMOLED screen (800 x 480), microphone, G-sensor, T-DMB, WiFi (b/g) and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR connectivity.
The D3 Plenue also features an FM radio, HDMI out 1080P HD playback along with DivX/Xvid decoding.
The audio player – which runs Android 2.1 – is expected to be available in 8, 16, and 32 GB variants.
Of course, the D3 Plenue isn’t the first Android-powered media player to be announced this month, as Samsung is reportedly prepping a tricked-out Galaxy to compete against Apple’s iPod.
However, unlike the D3 which runs a relatively outdated version of Android,
the Galaxy Player is loaded with Froyo goodness – which could make a difference to hard-core fanbois.
In addition, the Player offers users some pretty respectable specs, like:
- 1GHz CPU
- 4-inch Super Clear LCD WVGA screen (800×480)
- T-DMB
- SoundAlive
- Wi-Fi , Bluetooth 3.0
- 3.2MP rear camera, front facing (VGA) camera for video calling
- GPS
- HD video playback
- MicroSD card slot
- 1200mAh removable battery
So, which would I buy?
Well, aside from price, my decision would most likely be influenced by Galaxy Player’s slightly higher-level specs (no word on D3 cameras, for example), as well as the fact that is loaded with Froyo 2.2.
Plus, the D3 Plenue is manufactured by the Korean-based Cowon, so no word as to whether or not the unit will ever make it Stateside.
Nevertheless, the Plenue’s launch indicates that the media player market is poised for rapid expansion, with a number of companies leveraging Google’s Android to steadily chip away at Apple’s market share.
