Well color us surprised…
After reports began circulating that Apple’s white version of the iPhone 4 was about 3mm thicker than the standard black version, Consumer Reports has come forward to say that’s just not true.
“When we compared a white iPhone 4 with a black iPhone 4 in our Yonkers, NY, lab using high-quality calipers, we found they were both the same thickness -0.37 inches,” the consumer advocate group said.
On the official product page on Apple.com, the company lists the thickness of the white iPhone 4 as 9.3mm, the same as the black version, so when it was reported that there was a discrepancy, it lit up all over the Internet.
The delay of the white device became something of a punchline for Apple critics, as not many people could understand why it took more than 300 days to just make something a different color, especially when the iPad 2 was able to launch in black and white from day one.
Apple VP Phil Schiller’s comments in an Allthingsd.com interview became an instant soundbyte. Schiller said, “not as simple as making something white. There’s a lot more that goes into both the material science of it–how it holds up over time…but also in how it all works with the sensors.”
So customers who had been waiting more than 300 days for their white iPhone probably don’t care how thick it is, but now they can at least rest easy knowing nothing is different.
