AT&T targets Android market with Motorola BackFlip

AT&T has finally taken a small step towards embracing the wider Android market by agreeing to sell Motorola’s BackFlip smartphone.

The Android-powered device is the first Motorola smartphone to include the company’s “Backtrack” feature – which allows users to quickly navigate through websites and menus with a touch panel located behind the screen.

According to AT&T spokesperson David Christopher, BackTrack offers customers a new way to easily scroll through text, e-mails and news feeds without obscuring the home screen.

The BackFlip also features Motorola’s Motoblur platform, which syncs Facebook, MySpace and Twitter updates with phone book and email contacts – while threading status updates and profile pics via calls, messages and address books.

In addition, the device boasts a full HTML browser, 3.1″ high-res, touch screen display, a 5 MP camera, GPS, Wi-Fi connectivity and 7.2 HSPA 3G.

The BackFlup will be available on March 8 for $99, after a $100 mail-in rebate.
