Google’s Android operating system currently claims the largest share of the U.S. consumer smartphone market with a very impressive 39%.
Meanwhile, Apple’s popular iOS weighs in at second place with 28%, while RIM’s moribund BlackBerry has dropped down to a paltry 20%.
However, as Nielsen points out, Apple is the only company manufacturing smartphones with iOS. As such, Cupertino should be ranked the top smartphone manufacturer in the United States.
Other leading manufacturers currently include HTC, whose Android handsets command a very respectable 14% of the smartphone market and whose Windows Mobile/WP7 devices account for 6% of the lucrative space.
Motorola is considered another leading manufacturer, with Android devices owned by 11% of smartphone consumers.
Meanwhile, Samsung’s Android devices are used by 8% of smartphone owners and Windows Mobile/WP7 phones by 2%.
Interestingly enough, Android’s market share seems to have grown by only 2% since April.
Then again, as Abhiroop Basu of Android Police notes, it is “prudent” to keep in mind that WebOS and Symbian’s market share is only 2% each.
“Additionally, HTC’s combined market share (that is, Android OS + Windows Phone) is actually 20%, which is the same as RIM’s… It must be particularly good news for the Taiwanese manufacturer to be tied for second place in terms of manufacturer market share,” added Basu.
