Hewlett Packard’s Android tablet was priced at $170 and up when the Slate 7 first launched in April. And now? Well, HP is lowering the cost of its 7-inch (1024 x 600 pixel display) tablet to $140.
As previously reported on TG Daily , the Slate 7 is powered by a 1.6 GHz Rockchip RK3066 dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. A 16GB iteration of the Slate is also available for $170.
Nevertheless, as Liliputing’s Brad Linder notes, HP’s Slate 7 might not be the best deal around – even after a price reduction.
“The $199 Google Nexus 7 costs more, but has a higher resolution display and faster processor. Amazon is currently selling the Kindle Fire HD for $169 and up, [while] you can pick up a Barnes & Noble NOOK HD for $129,” he explained.
“[However], unlike some of those tablets, the HP Slate 7 does have a pretty pure Android experience (4.1 Jelly Bean) rather than a custom version of Google’s operating system. It also has a microSD card slot for extra storage.”
Unfortunately, the Slate 7 only offers up to 5 hours of battery life, which is indeed rather paltry by current standards. Plus, tablets with the same specs are are available for under $100 in China and from online importers.
Of course, such tablets wouldn’t have “HP” stamped on them, but I’m guessing the lack of a big brand name probably doesn’t really bother people all that much these days.
