There are really quite a numer of advantages to an E-ink display fitted on devices such as digital readers and mobile phones.
First and foremost, E-ink screen technology is very power miserly, meaning longer battery life for your gadget. The screens are also very easy to read in direct sunlight, making them great for outdoor use.
However, there are some downsides to E-ink displays such as their inability to show video and only typically offering black and white graphics.
Nevertheless, a China-based company known as Onyx has announced that it is going to be rolling out an Android-powered smartphone equipped with an E-ink display. The phone – dubbed the Onyx E43 – boasts a 4.3-inch screen paired with a 1 GHz processor.
The company expects to launch the phone this summer.
Unfortunately, that’s all we know, at least as far as specifications go.
Interestingly, the company is also talking up a tablet called the Onyx Boox R65, which apparently features a larger screen of unspecified size.
This device is loaded with integrated Wi-Fi, a front light, an IR touchscreen, a 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor, 256 MB of RAM, 4 GB of storage and Android 2.3.
Yet another version of the above-mentioned tablet known as the C65 has also been announced. The difference between the two devices? A capacitive touchscreen rather than an IR display.
Unfortunately, pricing and availability of the above-mentioned tablets remain a mystery.
