According to a report, Google is working with Samsung to create a 10-inch version of its popular Nexus 7 tablet.
CNET says that it has heard from NPD analyst Richard Shim about the new device, which would compete directly with the iPad.
The Nexus 10 will have a 2560×1600 display, with a pixels-per-inch resolution of 299. This would actually be a more powerful screen than the iPad’s Retina Display.
Clearly, this will be a more expensive product than the Nexus 7, which has a $199 price tag.
Obviously, for Google and the Nexus 7, price was the number one concern. It let the market play out for a while before it stepped in and stamped its seal of approval on its own tablet.
And during that time, it appeared to realize that if consumers want a 10-inch, fully-functional, graphically intensive tablet, they’ll buy an iPad. But if they just want something to check their emails, play a mobile game every now and then, and maybe read an ebook on the go, they want something as cheap as possible. The Nexus 7 is now filling that need.
The question is whether Google can truly take on the big boy – the iPad. We’ll see. Its plan to partner with Samsung to offer a co-branded tablet could be the catalyst needed to provide a true challenger to Apple’s dominating device.
