A reportedly leaked Paypal memo suggests that the massive fall 2011 Xbox 360 “Dashboard Update” will happen on November 15.
Microsoft has been rolling out significant upgrades to the internal Xbox 360 software consistently over the last few years, and this one is expected to be as big as any of the others.
Microsoft teased the update at the annual E3 trade show earlier this year. Among the features expected to roll out are the ability to stream live TV, have access to exclusive sports and music content, and deeper integration and menu controls with the Kinect motion and voice recognition.
Until now, all we’ve known is that an update with these features is expected by the end of the year. But the Paypal memo, obtained by game blog Kotaku, points to a November 15 date. Not coincidentally, that also happens to be the 10th anniversary of the original Xbox launch.
So why are the internal people at Paypal getting these details? Gamers have been able to use their Paypal accounts to pay for Xbox 360 content for a while now, but this update is expected to promote and extend that partnership even further.
Microsoft is good at presenting a lot of really high-concept, lofty marketing language, but some have had issues with its inability to deliver on those high promises.
The Kinect is a good example, as it was supposed to revolutionize the way we play and has ended up being nothing more than a unique version of the Wii.
So this massive update may sound cool right now but we’ll wait to pass judgment until we can play around with the new features.
