iTunes 10 Debuts with Music-Centric Social Networking Service [Unplugging]

It’s the weekend – time to check out what is going in the world of music as we unplug. iTunes debuts “Ping,” Belle & Sebastian, Cee Lo-Green, Sufjan Stevens, Matt & Kim, Moogfest, and more.

Do we need another social networking service? Apple CEO Steve Jobs says “Yes.” The new version of iTunes, which was released Wednesday, features a social networking service called “Ping,” a combination of Facebook and Twitter for the music lovers. Ping enables users to discover new music, read about upcoming tours and artist info, follow friends and musicians, and customize album and song charts. Also, feel free to share your music critiques and opinions via Ping’s commenting system. With 160-million iTunes users in 23 countries, Ping will probably be the next big social networking phenomenon.

Belle & Sebastian recently announced a special performance October 5th at the Hollywood Forever cemetery in Hollywood, CA – the home of such stars as Johnny Ramone and Cecil B. DeMile. Also, Moogfest has added Cee Lo Green, Sleigh Bells, Neon Indian, Omar Souleyman and Mutemath to this year’s festival.

New music this week includes Sufjan Stevens, Matt & Kim, and Kanye and Jay-Z. Sufjan Stevens has released a free download of track “I Walked” from his upcoming album Age of Adz. Matt & Kim has also released a new single “Cameras” from their upcoming album Sidewalks, which is out November 2nd. Kanye West and Jay-Z have announced the release of a mini-album, Watch the Throne, to be released by the end of 2010. After you take a listen to all of that, watch Cee Lo Green’s official video for “F**k You” and buy your Moogfest tickets.
