Whether or not a long-awaited Justice League film gets made depends on the success of Man of Steel. If Steel takes off at the box office, Justice League will go forward. It’s definitely been a very rocky road for Justice League, and the success of The Avengers helped pull it out of development hell.
But it’s not going to get made if Man of Steel doesn’t do well, which doesn’t seem likely. Frankly, even if the movie’s a heap of dung it will at least have an enormous opening weekend at the box office.
Now Collider tells us that Zack Snyder, the director of Man of Steel, may also be approached for Justice League if Steel is indeed a hit. So far, the buzz on Man of Steel is positive, and we’re still keeping our fingers crossed that it’s the Superman reboot we’ve all been hoping for.
As Empire reports, “Warner Bros.’ long –term view has been revised to embrace this new vision, just as the Dark Knight films resisted the commodification of Marvel. Whether we get a Justice League, they say, depends on Man of Steel. If we do, they say, Zack Snyder will be asked to direct.”
It’s interesting that Warners would potentially approach Snyder to helm Justice League, possibly to keep up the continuity of Steel, and it’s also a given that there will be Superman sequels down the road. Again, we know for sure that Justice League depends on the success of the next Superman, whoever will be directing it.
Snyder also confirmed to Empire that Man of Steel’s running time is epic, two hours and twenty-eight minutes. “I have a hard time having perspective,” Snyder said. “But I have to say that it is everything that I could have hoped for. Touch wood that I am not insane, but it feels really good.”
While we’re dying to see if the new Superman movie truly delivers, we’re also intrigued by the possibilities of Justice League. It won’t be an easy superhero team up to pull off, it can easily get really cheesy in the wrong hands, but we’d love to see what a great writer / director team, and an all-star cast, can potentially do with it. The success of The Avengers is what brought the project back from the dead at Warner Brothers. Could it possibly go head to head with Marvel’s all-star team? Stay tuned…
