More talk of Ghostbusters 3

It’s been a while since any news of Ghostbusters 3 has surfaced, and we figured it finally just died and we’d never hear anything further about it again.

But of course you can’t discount the tenacity of Dan Aykroyd, who is very determined to bring Ghostbusters back, even after over a decade of effort.

So after a little bit of silence, Aykroyd talked again about what has to be one of the longest in development comedy sequels in history. As Giant Freakin Robot reports, Aykroyd told ABC he feels “re-encouraged” about tackling Ghostbusters 3 again. There’s a new writer working on the script, and he’s “reinvigorated by the pages that I have seen.”

While we should especially take this with a grain of salt, Aykroyd also said, “It should be into production by the fall and be shooting by the new year.” This seems highly unlikely that the film could get the greenlight this fast and be up and running by fall.

Still, Aykroyd remains the biggest cheerleader for Ghostbusters 3 one day seeing the light of day, and he promised, “We’re going to really put it into ninth gear in this third one. It’s going to be very, very exciting. It sounds real now. We’ve got a sharp new writer on it, [Director] Ivan (Reitman) is on it, Harold Ramis is on it, I’m on it. And if I can put the catch-net on Billy [Murray] and bring him in, it will be wonderful, if he decides to do it. There will always be a hole for him.”

As Robot notes, Ghostbusters 3 was supposed to start shooting this summer, but Sony stopped the production, reportedly because the studio was having financial problems. But again, Aykroyd will clearly never say die with this one, and he’ll give it everything he’s got, whether it ever finally gets made or not.

As to whether he can get Ghostbusters 3 made through sheer will, well, it all remains to be seen. Again, take it with a grain of salt, don’t hold your breath, but if the official announcement comes through, and we actually see tangible evidence that the movie is getting made, like some on set photos, you know we’ll have them here on TG when it happens.
