Jon Favreau first came on the scene with the comedy Swingers, and he’s transitioned well into directing with such films as Elf, Zathura, and of course, the first Iron Man film.
So Iron Man 2 and Cowboys and Aliens didn’t do that well, but they can’t all be winners, and I’m willing to bet a movie or two down the road Favreau should be back on top of his game again.
Favreau of course didn’t direct The Avengers, and he’s not directing Iron Man 3 either, but he just talked to the Hollywood Reporter about the films because Faverau did a great job launching Iron Man on the big screen.
And as we know from the very end of the first Iron Man, The Avengers was in the cards from the beginning.
“It was something we always planned for, and hoped for, but anything could have gone wrong, and it took a lot of things to go right,” Favreau said.
“We had done a lot of set up in Iron Man 2 and even in Iron Man 1, we were hoping that it would come to this. I don’t think it became a reality until the last few years, but we were definitely planning for it.”
While Shane Black, the writer of Lethal Weapon, is helming Iron Man 3, Favreau is producing, and the shoot begins in a few weeks.
“I was just talking to Shane Black and Downey, and I think it’s a really smart way to go,” Favreau continued.
“I’m happy to see that it’s taking a bit of a tonal shift from The Avengers…just a little more offbeat. I think it delves deeper into what makes Tony Stark tick and plays on the unexpected original unpredictable quality of the character that I think fans gravitate to.”
Favreau also says he’s a producer on Revolution, the new JJ Abrams show, and he’s directing the pilot.
“JJ and I have been looking to work together in TV for a long time,” Favreau said. “JJ’s shows are all really cast-driven, so a lot of care went into finding the right people for the parts.”
The plot of Revolution is we lose all forms of energy, and while Favreau has been filming the pilot, they’ve been forwarding on the dailies to JJ online while he’s shooting Star Trek 2, which made Favreau joke, “We would communicate using the same technology that the show eliminates.”
