God knows it’s an idea whose time has obviously come. Frankly, I’m amazed it hasn’t happened sooner, but apparently there’s a show called Geek Love the Learning Channel will premiere on December 18.
As you may have inferred, this is a dating show where geeks will engage in “speed dating” at natural geek habitats like Comic Con. There will be two specials, half an hour each, and if they bring in enough viewers, a full blown series should follow, and there should be plenty of contestants more than willing to do this show.
I first learned about this on Entertainment Weekly, and apparently there’s a guy named Ryan Glitch who does sci-fi speed dating and inspired this logical initiative.
Personally, I think it’s a great idea, because, as you probably know, geeks have very busy schedules of Star Trek, comics, and launching George Lucas Blu-Ray boycotts, which makes it rather tough to get out there and meet actual women in real life.
Of course there’s plenty of opportunities for the cruelty that often comes with reality TV, but I’m hoping this show will give people better insights into geeks, that we actually can be decent and good hearted people underneath our pale and socially awkward exteriors, it just takes us a hell of a lot more time and effort to convey that to women.
Then again, there has been a lot more hope for us on the horizon in recent years, as we’ve seen women (ostensibly) more interested in geek stuff like horror movies, video games, and Transformers. And yes, we know a lot of the real hot chicks at Comic Con are the booth babes, but maybe they’ll be a great beauty and the geek pairing as well.
I think there’s definitely interesting possibilities with this one that could go in a lot of different directions, and again, it takes geeks time to grow on people, so maybe speed dating’s not the right approach. Geek Love’s also a fine title, although a bit obvious. What was that great line from Dumb and Dumber? So you’re saying there’s a chance…
