Making low-budget films depicting the more mundane side of a grand cataclysm seems to be all the rage these days.
Movies like 4:44 Last Day on Earth and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World are not about the heroes of the day, or even any one important at all, but instead choose to focus on what it would be like to be the little guy in these end-of-days circumstances. How do you live, how do you love, when everything might be just about to end?
Extraterrestrial follows this same vein, following what would already have been a Woody Allen-esque sexually tense comedy about a woman and her trio of suitors (the boyfriend, the one-night stand, and the creepy neighbor) spending a day together. Throw in the end of the world, and we’ve got an interesting sci-fi with the potential for some truly compelling moments.
The official synopsis is thus:
When Julio wakes up in a strange apartment after a night of partying, he’s pleasantly surprised to discover it belongs to a beautiful one-night-stand he can’t remember–Julia. What’s already an awkward situation is made even more so when they discover a giant flying saucer hovering above the city, which is now deserted. Now Julio must contend with a jealous ex-boyfriend, an eccentric neighbor–and very possibly the end of the world!

There is some more material available on the website for the film, including a teaser cut to appeal more to an american audience.
Extraterrestrial is coming to New York and LA on June 22nd, 2012. If well-received, it may get a wider (theater) release.
