These days there’s more than one way to tell that your show is a hit. Good ratings are the obvious indicator, but these days, we look for how many viewers save the film on DVR to watch later. This adds on additional ratings points to shows like Game of Thrones, and apparently Gotham is a hit because it was number one in its first week of DVR ratings.
As the Hollywood Reporter explains, “Networks are downplaying next-day ratings more than ever and offering projections of DVR performance.” And according to the Reporter, Gotham had the biggest boost from DVR viewing, “with a lift of 56% and 1.8 points in the key demo of adults 18-49.”
This shouldn’t be that big of a surprise. Anything Batman is going to have a big debt, and Gotham got good reviews as well. Superheroes will be dominating movies and TV for at least the next two years to come, and next summer the genre should be exploding again with Avengers 2: Age of Ultron, which will be released on May 1, 2015.
