Only 45 direct-channel Sony retail locations remain in operation.
After facing sluggish sales and a poor economy, Sony has axed nearly one-fifth of its retail presence.
Sony said the decision was “a result of our ongoing evaluations and careful review of our future direction. Sony continually evaluates all areas of our retail business to ensure that we are offering the best consumer experience while maximizing profitability.”
This is a far cry from comments made by the company in 2008, when 44 SonyStyle locations were in existence. At that time, Sony said it wanted to aggressively push its retail store presence, announcing plans to push the number to 60 stores.
Unfortunately, it only managed to reach 56 before it realized the direct brick-and-mortar retail market may not be its best game.
The 11 closed stores consisted of one location in each of the following states: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
