Samsung says its next-gen smartphone is like a PC

Samsung claims its next-gen smartphones will boast performance levels comparable to (mid-range) PCs.

According to an unnamed Samsung exec, the devices will be powered by a dual-core 2Ghz ARM CPU – which effectively raises “data processing capacities” to a (supposed) cool 4Ghz.

“We are planning to release a 2Ghz dual core CPU-equipped smartphone by next year,” the exec told Maeil Business Newspaper.

“This product will have the data processing capacities of a regular PC.”

It should be noted that Samsung is still designing the above-mentioned dual-core CPU, which is likely to be launched under the newly minted Exynos brand (Hummingbird’s successor).

Although it may have been easier for Samsung to manufacture a single-core 4Ghz CPU, the corporation instead chose to go with a dual-core 2Ghz CPU strategy.

“Samsung is opting for the dual core as it is better optimized for smartphone products,” Maeil’s Soon-wook Choi explained.

“Dual facilitates multitasking [on] smartphones by allotting the workload to two separate cores.”
