Sometimes it seems like Facebook and Twitter are nothing more than sites designed for updating exactly what you ate for lunch. But recently, the social networking sites have proved themselves far more useful, helping to fuel political change in both Egypt and Tunisia.
A man in Egypt went as far as to name his newborn daughter “Facebook” to honor the social networking site he feels is partly responsible for commanding change.
What kind of nicknames can come from such a name? Perhaps Facey? Or FB?
Gamal Ibrahim, the man responsible for naming his daughter Facebook, said he did it “to express his joy at the achievements made by the January 25 youth,” reported Al-Ahram, one of Egypt’s most popular newspapers.
Facebook became a hub for the free transfer of information throughout Egypt during the recent revolution, acting as a catalyst for political change.
Egyptian Google executive, Wael Ghonim organized a Facebook page, which later became a hub for the revolution. Similarly in Tunisia, Facebook and Twitter helped ensure the free flow of information during government crackdowns.
Guess it’s kind of like naming your child George Washington or Napoleon, although naming your child after a social networking site may seem a tad extreme.
