T-Mobile reportedly set to lower unlimited plan rates

In a world where customers are nickel-and-dimed for everything and everything only gets more expensive, T-Mobile is apparently going to offer a rather refreshing move in the opposite direction.

According to T-Mobile insider blog TmoNews, the carrier is expected to lower its “Even More” unlimited plan to $79.99. That would be a $20 reduction from the current price, and would be considerably cheaper than plans from AT&T or Verizon.

When the iPhone landed on Verizon, instead of sitting by the sidelines T-Mobile has rushed forward to mitigate any potential damage. It kickstarted a new, strong marketing campaign that’s reminiscent of those old “I’m a Mac, and I’m a PC” commercials that worked so well for Apple.

In addition, just days after the iPhone launched on Verizon, T-Mobile offered an unprecedented sale in which every single phone in its entire catalog was free after a two-year contract subsidy. The sale knocked off as much as $200 from the price of some of its high-end smartphones. That’s not exactly insignificant.

The new plan rates will reportedly be in effect beginning February 23, which puts it right alongside the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, one of the carrier’s most anticipated phones.

T-Mobile’s 4G network claims to be larger than any other, but it’s running on a technology known as HSPA+, which is not as powerful as the other options offered by Verizon and Sprint.

Nevertheless, T-Mobile – which had been kind of quiet over the last couple years – is starting to put the keys in the ignition and steamroll its way back into the American consciousness. You’ve got to hand it to them for trying.
