The National Organization for Women is outraged over Gawker’s decision to publish a story about an alleged one-night stand Christine O’Donnell (purportedly) had with an anonymous dude some three years ago.
“NOW repudiates Gawker [for] running this piece,” the organization said in an official statement quoted by Politico.
“It operates as public sexual harassment. And like all sexual harassment, it targets not only O’Donnell but all women contemplating stepping into the public sphere.”
As expected, O’Donnell’s campaign communications director Doug Sachtleben also slammed Gawker for publishing the controversial piece, calling it nothing more than “sexism and slander.”
“This story is just another example of the sexism and slander that female candidates are forced to deal with – from Secretary [Hillary] Clinton to Gov. [Sarah] Palin to soon-to-be Gov. [Nikki] Haley.
“Christine’s political opponents have been willing to engage in appalling and baseless attacks – all with the aim of distracting the press from covering the real issues in this race.
“Even [NOW] gets it, but Christine’s opponent disturbingly does not. Classless Coons goons have proven yet again to have no sense of common decency or common sense with their desperate attacks to get another rubber stamp for the Obama-Pelosi-Reid agenda.”
However, Delaware Democrat Chris Coons denied that his camp had anything to do with the post by a nameless individual claiming a drunken encounter with O’Donnell.
“The Gawker item is [truly] despicable, cowardly and has absolutely no value at all to any Delaware voters,” Coons spokesman Daniel McElhatton told Politico.
“[And yes], we [of course] denounce it with great vigor.”
