After several weeks of speculation about which phones will be getting the latest version of Android and when the updates will happen, there’s finally an official word from one of the phone manufacturers.
Buried in the 19th page in a discussion thread about the Droid X in Motorola’s official forums, Motorola employee “Matt” wrote the following about a Microsoft Exchange bug and happened to reveal an official Android update timeline:
“Some Droid X users are experiencing an issue using Exchange 2003 email. Though the email is arriving on the Droid X, no notifications are appearing. A fix for this will be included in the upgrade to Android 2.2 scheduled for deployment by early September.”
This confirms what had been suggested in earlier speculation, though if the previous gossip is anything to believe, the update will happen before we reach September.
The next phone that should be getting the update is Verizon’s Droid, the #1 selling Android device. However, one of the most important enhancements in Android 2.2 will be stripped out of the Droid. There will be no ability to use the Droid as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot because the hardware cannot support it. Other Verizon phones, like the Droid X, should have no problems with this.
The Nexus One, the only phone that Google itself created, as well as the Evo 4G, representing T-Mobile and Sprint respectively, are currently the only handsets to have officially received Android 2.2, though some crafty Droid users have managed to get an unofficial leaked copy of the new OS already.
