In case you hadn’t heard, Google is working to bring ultra high-speed fiber optic networks to communities around the country. Now, you can track exactly where this project is making progress.
FiberForCommunities.com provides users with information about high-speed fiber optics, a list of cities whose governments have officially requested participation in Google’s ambitious project, and a form for individual users to express interest in getting their city involved.
Google says that 200,000 individual requests have come through since it launched the initiative in February. Around 1,100 communities have filed for official participation.
In an official Google Blog post, the Fiber team’s product manager Minnie Ingersoll wrote, “Throughout this process, one message has come through loud and clear: people are hungry for better and faster Internet access.” With the new Web site, “you’ll also be able to advocate for common-sense federal and local policies that would help fiber deployments nationwide.”
