Thousands of hours of live sports and entertainment programming from ESPN will be streamed through Sprint phones over the next year through a new channel on the wireless carrier’s existing mobile TV infrastructure.
As of Friday, Sprint TV now has an ESPN Mobile TV channel where live sports events will be broadcast, as well as original shows from the sports network.
Basketball, baseball, football, and soccer matches from college and professional divisions will all be included in the programming. So will episodes of Live NBA Fastbreak, Live Baseball Tonight, and Live Friday Night Fights.
“To super serve sports fans, you have to provide live coverage on the go, and we are excited to be working with Sprint to provide this offering to its customers,” said Matt Murphy, Disney/ESPN senior vice president for digital video distribution.
In 2010 alone, more than 800 live sports events will be broadcast through the mobile network. Sprint TV’s service is offered by MobiTV, a company that provides mobile TV services to most of the major wireless networks. ESPN Mobile TV is also available on Verizon and AT&T.
