Santa Clara (CA) – Intel has notified its customers that it is phasing out its Z-P230 solid state disk drives, which have been sold in 4 – 16 GB capacities since June of last year.
According to a product change notification, the SSD series is being discontinued without receiving an explicit successor. Final orders will be taken on May 4 of this year with last shipments planned for June 4, 2009.
Intel recently shifted its attention to its newer generation of 80 GB and 160 GB SSDs, which sell at much higher prices and help contain the losses in the NAND flash business. Z-P230 flash drives sold for less than $15 in 4 GB versions, for less than $25 in the 8 GB version and for less than $45 as 16 GB models, according to industry sources. The drives were aimed at the nettop and netbook market.
