Now that Samsung’s Galaxy S8 series and the LG G6 are the most revered, high-performing Android phones, what does the next Google Pixel needs to stay up to or beat the competition? Apart from the Galaxy series, the next phones Android users can be a little bit happy about is the next Google Pixel and Pixel XL.
When the Pixel was launched last October, it had a lot of specs, there were software updates at regular intervals, the camera was great, and the Nougat Android version was impressive. However, things move so fast in the mobile world, and the Galaxy series came with more camera power, more processing more, and better software updates. If the next Pixel series will live up to expectation, it will need to beef up a lot of things.
Waterproofing
The Apple iPhone 7, the LG G6, and the Samsung Galaxy S8 can all survive a full bath in water. That means that if Google wants to stay on top of the competition, it needs to make sure that its new Pixel 2 (or whatever name Google decides to call it) is equally waterproof. Though the current Pixel can survive little droplets of water, this won’t go anywhere this time. At least, it should be at IPX8, the new standard for water resistance – it should be able to sink in 3 feet of water and up to 30 minutes – and still come out triumphant.
Space for expandable storage
The earlier Pixel had 32GB and 128GB internal storage without any option of storage expandability. However, the LG G6 and the S8 have expandable external storages of up to 2TB. This means that the Pixel, in order to stay on top or at par, needs to add expandability to its coming phone.
More camera quality
Though Google can still compete on the basis of camera quality if it decides to leave the current specs as they are, it still lags behind in some aspects. For instance, the Lens Blur feature of its camera that blurs a picture’s background is not so much accepted by users. When compared with the iPhone 7 Plus, the Pixel cannot compare as the iPhone is capable of capturing low-light, clearer videos plus the ability to record steadier video footages. If the next Pixel is able to deal with these specs, the next phone would nearly have a perfect camera.
Increase battery life
The Pixel and the Pixel XL all have a battery life of up to 13 hours. That’s undoubtedly a great time to clock in. if the upcoming Pixel leaves this spec as it is, it can at least compete with LG’s G6. But that won’t make it come near the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus which have battery lives of up to 16 and 18 hours respectively. So to capture or move with the entire industry, the next Pixel needs to uplift the battery life.
Those bezels should be thinned out
The Pixel surely has an elegant design. But is also undoubtedly known that mobile phone users are infatuated with bezelless phones. So now that the LG G6 and the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus all have thin bezels, the upcoming Pixel will surely look obsolete in design if it doesn’t change. Bezelles are not a must-have, however, giving it the bezelle looks will ensure that the next Pixel will be part of today’s extremely sleek tech aesthetic.
So when are we getting an answer?
The Google Annual Developer Conference, I/O, is coming up in some few days, beginning May 17. We are not speculating to hear the announcement of the phone over there, which might surely happen around October. But in the meantime, let’s keep tabs on what Google will likely bring on board.
