It’s been speculated for a long time now, and it’s now official that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are returning for another run of the X-Files. As we reported yesterday on TG, the rumor was that this would be a “short stack” series, or a limited run, and the new model X-Files will indeed be only six episodes long.
The show will be done through Fox, like always, and as the company said in a statement to the Daily Beast, “The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture – yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. We’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”
As series creator Chris Carter told the Beast, the next incarnation of X-Files will be “honest to the characters, and what happened to them since the series ended and the second movie.” Carter said there are no scripts yet for the series, but he will be overseeing the writing on the show.
With so many shows being rebooted these days, it’s easy to be cynical and think it’s Hollywood not being creative, but as Carter put it, a good idea isn’t just getting old on a shelf collecting dust, “its actually accruing value.”
David and Gillian are both happy to be onboard, and as Carter puts it, “It was kind of the perfect timing for everyone involved. We all had a space in which to do it, we all had a desire to tell these stories, and I think the world’s gotten that much stranger in the last 13 years.”
