After years of inactivity following the release of Hellboy 2, Guillermo Del Toro got back in the saddle with Pacific Rim, and he’s got a new horror film, Crimson Peak, coming next year. While Del Toro has been trying to get his adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness off the ground, he also has plans for an update of Frankenstein, another Pacific Rim movie, as well as Dark Universe, which could be like a Del Toro version of The Avengers.
Dark Universe is set up at Warner Brothers, and it features Swamp Thing, Demon, Deadman, Zatanna, and Constantine. As Del Toro told Collider, “It’s a very different universe.” Indeed.
Del Toro told Forbes that the script for Dark Universe was completed and turned in to Warner Brothers on November 25. “The studio’s reactions to the script will be coming back in a few days, and the film could take another step toward production if Warner has a favorable opinion of what they see on the page.”
Even though Pacific Rim wasn’t a ginormous hit, there are indeed plans for a sequel, and as Del Toro told Collider and The Onion, “What happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat?” So will it be, as the Onion puts it, less monsters and more science? Del Toro said part two will take place several years after the events of the first one and, “It’s quite a different movie than the first one…the Kaijus are very different and you’re gonna see a very different type of the robots I think. It’s gonna be quite a different adventure.”
