We were frankly very shocked to learn that Batman, Superman, and Star Trek didn’t have huge European markets. We learned this when we found out that the people behind the last three Dark Knight, Superman and Trek films had to do promotion all over the world to raise awareness.
Apparently the biggest markets for all three of those franchises are in the States, yet The Avengers Age of Ultron shot in Korea, South Africa, Italy and England. As Joss Whedon told the Hollywood Reporter, “This is a very global film. We wanted the world perspective on the Avengers, what they’ve been doing and who they are. They’re being the Avengers, and that’s a global thing.”
Whedon also laughed that this film was shot in four different countries but “the entire film takes place in Cleveland.”
The Avengers is also a movie that apparently doesn’t have to worry about its global reach with fans. It made more money overseas than in the States, and the number of views the Ultron trailer got on YouTube, 34.3 million, is a global take.
