While The Andromeda Strain made Michael Crichton a name to watch in sci-fi, Westworld was a big success, and one that helped make him a brand. Not to mention Yul Brenner’s robot performance was iconic, even influencing Arnold in The Terminator.
So now Westworld is coming back, and it’s a great idea for a reboot. With today’s modern FX, it could indeed make a cool series, and Deadline tells us it’s headed to HBO.
The show is being produced by Bad Robot, JJ Abrams’s company, and legendary producer Jerry Weintraub. The cast will include Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Miranda Otto, and Jeffrey Wright.
The pilot for Westworld was shown at Time Warner’s Investors Day, and apparently the HBO executives liked what they saw so much, a full series order is pretty much a given. So we’re definitely looking forward to see what a trip to Westworld will be like today. Abrams is currently the guy with his antenna in touch with the zeitgeist, much like Lucas and Jerry Bruckheimer in their prime, and maybe Westworld can be successfully reinvented for today’s generation.
