We just reported on TGD about the new Spike Jonze movie Her, which deals with technology, and it has already raised some Oscar buzz, as well as debate. Academy Awards pundits are wondering whether Scarlett Johansson is eligible for an Academy Award or not because she’s never seen in her latest movie, Her.
In Her, Johansson is a disembodied voice that is helping Joaquin Phoenix, and eventually Phoenix ends up falling in love with the voice. In a sense, Johansson’s performance almost raises a rhetorical question, like if a tree fell in the forest and no one saw it, did the tree fall?
Well, according to Giant Freakin Robot and the Hollywood Reporter, the Golden Globes claim she’s “ineligible” for her voice work. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who decide the Golden Globe nominations, has already given Warner Brothers the bad news. The studio appealed the decision, but the Foreign Press Association won’t budge.
As the Reporter reminds us, The Foreign Press Association also gave Andy Serkis the thumbs down for a Golden Globe for his motion capture work. Funny enough, Johansson has already won the Best Actress award at the Rome Film Festival, and the Reporter tells us she could still win nominations for the Academy Award, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award..
The talk of a Johansson winning an Oscar for Her may indeed be a lark, but who knows? Maybe voters will find her voice compelling enough to be Oscar worthy, or maybe, like Andy Serkis, she’s still has a long way to go.
