We all knew The Hunger Games: Catching Fire would make a big pile of money, that was a given. Yet the first week, it only came out a little bit ahead of the original. What a difference a holiday makes.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire continued to do incredible business over turkey day weekend, and it may end up beating the original by hitting a billion world-wide. From Wednesday to Sunday, Catching Fire made $110.2 million, and it’s currently at $296.5 million in the States, with $573 million world-wide.
Variety tells us this is now officially a record, with Catching Fire and the animated film Frozen having the biggest three-day and five-day records in cinema history. The previous record holder was another young adult hero story, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, which pulled in $82 million back in 2001. (You have to remember, that was a lot of money in those days…)
The Wrap tells us that Imax is also helping Catching Fire pull in a ton of dough. As we’ve reported previously here on TGD, audiences seem much more open to Imax than 3D these days, and with the recent ginormous success of Gravity, Imax has really hit a big peak at the box office.
So again, dystopian stories are what’s hot right now, and it looks like Catching Fire could indeed end up blowing away the original Hunger Games at the box office, especially if it keeps raking in money like this.
