Hunger Games: Catching Fire is going to be a huge movie. Duh. No big news flash there. We all know the next installment of the Hunger Games is going to be ginormous. The question is, how huge, and will it blow away the original?
November is shaping up to be a strong genre month with Hunger Games and Ender’s Game. We know the box office pundits don’t feel Ender’s Game will be huge, we actually feel they could be wrong, but what are their predictions for Catching Fire?
According to Variety, Catching Fire could potentially gross nearly a billion world-wide, with a stronger gross overseas than in the States. Current predictions have Catching Fire potentially making $375 million in the States, and $575 million international.
Lionsgate got very lucky with the Hunger Games, buying the rights when it had sold 180,000 copies, a very respectable number for a book, but now the series has 36 million copies in print.
Hunger Games creator Suzanne Collins , who rarely grants interviews, also told Variety the trailer for Catching Fire is “appropriately disturbing and thought-provoking…The stunning image of Katniss in her wedding dress that we use to sell tickets is just the kind of thing the Capitol would use to rev up its audience for the Quarter Quell [Games].”
Look for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on November 22.
