It’s been a very hard summer at the box office with over six weeks of flops in a row. The most notorious of a long stream of summer failures will either be The Lone Ranger, or After Earth. We at TGD followed both films closely, and despite so many efforts to try and turn things around, the Jerry Bruckheimer western seemed doomed from day one.
Bruckheimer and Depp have been blaming the press for the movie’s woes, which is amusing because Bruckheimer’s films were usually critic proof, especially when he was producing films by everyone’s critical whipping boy Michael Bay. But as Mark Wahlberg exclaimed to the L.A. Times and the Huffington Post, “They’re spending $250 million for two dudes on a horse? Where is the money going?”
Wahlberg also echoed the sentiments of many when he said, “They’re spending so much money to pull the wool over the audience’s eyes with these effects-driven movies. It’s not like Jurassic Park, where you saw something groundbreaking and innovative…Every end-of-the-Earth movie kind of feels the same.”

The Lone Ranger has proven such a disaster that according to The Wrap, Bruckheimer may be losing his final cut privileges for Pirates of the Caribbean 5. Jeez, there’s going to be another one of those? Maybe the Lone Ranger should convince Depp and company to work a little smaller next time.
