Shane Carruth, the writer/director of the acclaimed indie sci-fi flick Primer, has released a full trailer for his upcoming sci-fi thriller.
Working independently again, Carruth has created another abstract and confusing looking film, this time apparently about a couple attempting to survive an encounter with some kind of eldritch immortal creature. In the way that Primer was no straightforward time-travel piece, this will be no typical monster movie.
“A man and woman are drawn together,” reads the short synopsis that came with the trailer, “entangled in the life cycle of an ageless organism. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives.”
We don’t know much more about the production or plot details, but it’s likely best that way. Primer was certainly a better film in that I didn’t know hardly anything about it when it began. The 2003 film has won many awards, and the praise of many critics with the only negatives cited usually being the production values, as almost all scenes were done in one take, and some of the editing is a bit slip-shod.
The surprisingly cerebral and thought-prokoking nature of the tale, however, makes it a must see for all film-lovers, especially if you already enjoy time-travel stories, as this one manages to make a story which is truly about navigating through time, rather than a drama or action film which happens to contain some time-travel gimmicks.
After what he did for time-travel, I’m pretty excited to see his take on the monster thriller. Upstream Color, which stars Amy Seimetz, Shane Carruth, Andrew Sensenig and Thiago Martins hits theaters on March 22, 2012.
