Warner Bros. has released a new video showcasing its upcoming sci-fi film Pacific Rim.
In the future, mankind is forced to combat dangerous creatures from the sea known as Kaiju. Years into the defense effort, a group of particularly tough Kaiju attack, and stereotypical unlikely heroes have to come to the rescue.
We’ve seen very little of the Kaiju creatures so far, but this quick in-canon promo video (the studio erroneously refers to it as a ‘viral’ video), gives us our best look so far.
We also have this odd in-canon emergency alert system, which seems to indicate that humans have been dealing with these monsters for a protracted period of time.
The official synopsis is as follows:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes — a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
Finally, these promo images develop the lore just a bit more: a memo which showcases the international involvement in defeating the monsters and a set of blueprints illustrating the scale of the “seemingly obsolete Jaeger.”
Pacific Rim hits theaters on July 12, 2013.
